SELF

Struggling with questions about “who you are” isn’t new. It’s a part of our human life and constantly relevant and closely related to how we can exist together, now and in the future. Working with the Self as a subject in the field of design, creates more empathy both towards ourselves, and others.

The visual result of the project consists of 35 illustrated Self-portraits and 25 texts. The illustrations are symbols of the public Self, the conscious parts. The handwritten texts are symbols of the personal Self, the unconscious parts. The newspaper publication visualisesthe constant loop of creating and breaking down the Self. Ever changing, like a newspaper, there’s a new one every day. The three newspapers in the exhibition represent three different versions of a Self.

This auto-ethnographic design project connects to a wider question of social sustainability, where learning about yourself is a crucial step towards understanding others. Design with a focus on psychological sustainability to create a more inclusive world. Designing projects that would empower a younger version of myself, consciously working with feminism for the sake of women after me.
