Kontrast

The basis of the project has been to elevate a traditionally forgotten craft by applying it in a modern industrial context. The project is an investigation into how and if a forgotten craft can take place in modern times and the future. During the work, interest was awakened in the loop binding, also called “basta binne”. A basket-making craft that carries applicable benefits in furniture design. This craft had its heyday in the 19th century but faded away when industrialization hit.

The project has been about going back in history to highlight existing methods that already exist. Can these methods be preserved? Maybe we can make something new out of it? Can the industry that once killed the craft now lift the craft?

The loop binding has been applied to an industrially manufactured steel structure created in collaboration with the metal industry Johpomek. Together, this meeting creates two colorful lounge chairs, which play with two contrasting “worlds” in the hope of a meeting. Through movement, material meetings, dimensions, color and shape, have i created two lounge chairs that create an eye-catcher. The presentation of the loop binding back in the days is very different from the loop binding that I present today, but maybe that is what is needed to let our history live on!
