Body, relationships, and power are central issues in Lex Eliot Rose’s art. They often find form in the borderland between photography and performance. In Self-portraits/Queering the Lines, the artist explores how photography can affect the perception of the body – one’s own as well as others. Every day they create a double-exposure self-portrait. In the act, new body contours arise, leaving trances outside the categories of “man” or “woman.”
Through Lex Eliot Rose’s camera, our learned ideas about sex and gender are challenged. The book dummy presents a mix of the artist’s daily notes and subsequent reflections, placing the work in dialogue with the voices of others. Self-Portraits/Queering the Lines questions photography’s potential to convey the body’s inner movement and highlights the relationship between the physical body, the perception of it, and the ideas about it.
