Scrap Culture
Vindriver is a chandelier made from 16 tail lights, with 53 individual light bulbs, mounted on a steel fixture to resemble a cluster of fruit/berries/grapes.
The project revolves around a method and philosophy. There is no useless trash, only bad systems. In our society, we have countless established and optimised systems for buying new things, and very few and narrow systems for reuse. With this lamp, I want to shine a light on the fully functional things that are thrown away without anyone giving it a second thought.
The material used for the chandelier is recycled first and bought second. It is usually the other way around. The tail lights were rescued from a scrapyard, where they were attached to wrecked cars. The skeleton of the chandelier consists in part of scrapped steel pipes, and some of its veins are made of cables from old airbags. Some new materials had to be used, but focus has been on the unwanted. The trash is the main character in this story.
Used objects have a charm and a personality because they have a story to tell. Value arises in the transformation of the material, from useless junk to chandelier. The once discarded tail lights are brought to life and become jewels to adorn, and eyes that question the use of resources in our time. The lights are retired, but not dead.
With the Vindriver chandelier, I want to show the fruitfulness of trash.
