Nothing Ever Leaves The Island

By the rocky west-coast of Sweden, right next to the island of Tjörn, lies the little island of Tjörnekalv. Originally this was the home of fishermen, but over time the island has transformed into a place of rest and care-taking. Here live a community of people in around eighty houses, only a few stay here permanently and most houses are inhabited part-time. Materials and things are moved here slowly and not without difficulty. Once on the island, things tend to stay. Thrown-out things move into the houses of neighbors. Things lost in the ocean are brought back by the tide.

Nothing Ever Leaves The Island explores the collective memory, heritage and culture of Tjörnekalv through the format of an artist residency for artist mothers. The format of artist residencies has grown a lot in popularity over recent years, but the means or effects on the invited artists, involved communities and organizers of such residencies has not yet been answered within research.

This project expands on how design can inform the format of an artist residency, and what impact an artist residency potentially could have on the people and places involved in the process.
